Bridge Safety Inspector – Team Leader

Raleigh, North Carolina

This is an advanced level in-depth safety inspection work as the Team Leader of a 2 man bridge inspection team that conducts inspection on all types of structures in North Carolina.  Work in an outside environment at considerable heights, exposure to snakes, spiders, insects, and poisonous plants. Safety shoes will be required as a condition of employment.  Preference will be given to applicants with bridge safety inspection experience and progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance, major steel or concrete bridges or other structures.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in the assigned discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require certification. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

**Must have NBIS Bridge Inspection Course and five years inspection experience or ability to meet minimum qualifications and be certified as a Bridge Safety Inspection Team Leader in accordance with NCDOTD and FHWA’s Responsibilities of the Bridge Inspector, Inspection Team Leader as follows:

Each Team Leader must have at least one of the following to qualify:

  • PE registration
  • Five years of bridge inspection experience
  • NICET Level III or IV Bridge Safety Inspector certification,
  • Bachelor degree in engineering from ABET accredited college or university, a passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, and two years of bridge inspection experience
  • Associate Degree in engineering from ABET accredited college or university and four years of bridge inspection experience

Team Leaders must have successfully completed FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training and shall complete bridge inspection refresher training within each 60 month period.

**Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

Location of work: Office based in Raleigh, NC, but work assignments could be any county in NC.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Completion of NBIS Two Week Bridge Inspection Course (FWHA-NHI-130055)
  • Experience with Topside Bridge Inspection including Bridges, Pipes, Signs and Culverts
  • Experience with Bridge Inspection Equipment, i.e. Hydra Platforms, Man Lifts, Snooper Trucks and Boats
  • Experience using Word and Excel
  • Experience in drafting, sketching and report writing

 

Additional Expectations:
***Must have NBIS Bridge Inspection Course***  This person is responsible for carrying out in-depth inspections on bridges, light standards, culverts, pipes, sign supports & overhead walkways and preparation of reports detailing conditions found during the inspection process.  These reports are used in an evaluation process that determines the structural integrity and the capability of structures to support loads imposed on them by the traveling public and/or natural forces.  Other duties include training new inspectors, scheduling and plans the team’s activities in conformance with bridge priorities.  Work will primarily be in the county where the bridge is located based on assignments and needs of NCDOT.  The field work requires work in situations that are hazardous in their nature such a traffic congestion, working on slopes, climbing of high steel, working in confined areas, and working above water on scaffolds or the snooper crane at considerable heights.
