As part of a “Transformational Plan” to overhaul campus facilities and to expand health sciences, Alabama State University selected Volkert to oversee the construction of its new state-of-the-art Life Sciences building.
The project consisted of a four-story cast-in-place concrete structure that houses Alabama State’s biological sciences research and educational program. The 84,300 square foot facility has the latest in biological science research technology with extensive laboratory facilities throughout: a seventy five-seat tiered seminar room and a distance learning lab, as well as extensive support space. The facility also has a complete vivarium to support environmentally safe animal research. Particular attention was focused on coordination of the extensive utility requirements needed to accommodate the research and teaching labs, in addition to the special mechanical and electrical needs for a facility of this type.
Volkert provided program and construction management from a thorough design review through management of the warranty period. The project was completed successfully and the building opened in 2008.
