Cochrane-Africatown Bridge

Project Photos

Location: Mobile, AL
Client: Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT)

Volkert began initial planning for the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge with the preparation of an engineering feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and saw the award-winning ALDOT project through to its final design.

The Cochrane-Africatown Bridge replaced a deteriorating two-lane lift bridge over the Mobile River- a source of delays and safety concerns. The new bridge was designed to enhance traffic mobility and safety with minimal impact on nearby cultural and environmental resources. In addition to the preliminary studies, Volkert provided the preliminary and final designs, including road relocation, approaches, signing, signalization, and lighting.

Nearby Africatown is a historic site on Mobile’s African American Heritage Trail and is an economically and environmentally sensitive area. The EIS included corridor studies, environmental documentation, including DEIS, FEIS, noise, air quality, historical, archeological report, and a final engineering report. Numerous utility relocations were also necessary in the project corridor, including major transmission lines for Alabama Power Company, Gulf Oil terminal and storage tanks, and Citmoco Oil terminals and storage tanks.

The 140-foot vertical Cochrane-Africatown Bridge is the only three-span, continuous cable-stayed, concrete-segmental bridge in Alabama and has won numerous design awards:
