Volkert was responsible for all preliminary and final designs, construction plans, specifications, and supplemental reports. The design specified prefabrication off-site to minimize damage to the delicate marshlands in Mobile Bay.
The National Society of Professional Engineers named this bridge “One of the Ten Outstanding Engineering Achievements in the United States in 1978.” The bridge design also received the Award for Excellence from the Portland Cement Association for the Economical Use of Precast-Prestressed Monolithic Spans.
