The project consisted of field survey and preliminary and final design for a 2.8-mile section of I-165, from Reddy Street to I-65, an elevated urban expressway, and 3.5 miles of I-65 widening. Approximately six miles of new ramps and frontage roads and 2.5 miles of improvements to local streets were included in the project. Volkert was responsible for preliminary geometry, traffic analysis, and laneage. The final design included construction plans for roadway, bridges, signing, signalization, lighting, and drainage including detention ponds, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) coordination.
This project won the State Award for Engineering Excellence from the Consulting Engineers Council of Alabama in 1995.
