The City of Chattanooga chose Volkert to design and manage the revitalization of a key downtown corridor, Market Street, a principal artery running through Chattanooga’s central business district, as part of joint public and private efforts to restore and enliven Chattanooga’s urban center. Volkert provided design, construction management and inspection services for this high-profile urban renewal project.
The project encompassed an urban roadway, with curb and gutter drainage, on-street parking, pedestrian streetlights, trees, tree wells, irrigation, and utility relocations. In addition to the survey and design services, Volkert managed the solicitation and evaluation of bids and preparation of record drawings as well as construction engineering inspection. The project was later expanded to include an additional 4,000-feet of urban roadway and streetscape.
To meet the challenge of public interest and concern about the project, Volkert notified stakeholders, prepared public involvement materials, and held meetings to address questions and concerns. Inspection staff coordinated with the city to address issues such as the placement of flagpoles, planter locations, drainage and sidewalk materials.
