Volkert provided a corridor study and preliminary and final design services for this controlled-access bypass, to provide an unrestricted route for heavy freight and through traffic. Volkert prepared the environmental documentation, and assisted with public involvement and public hearings plans. The final design included multiple interchanges; including the four-level, I-85 interchange. Preliminary design included the section from US 231 to US 331.
The project consisted of the completion of a corridor study and design services for a 25-mile, 4 to 6 lane control-access bypass, including route interchanges with the existing US 90, I-85, I-65 within the Montgomery, Alabama metropolitan area. The study began on in1992 with three alternates and eleven sub-alternates, totaling approximately 100 centerline miles. Volkert was also responsible for the preparation of the environmental documentation for the completion of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), public involvement plans, and public hearings.
