Location: Washington, DC
Client: Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation

Volkert provided civil and electrical engineering services for the design of the Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th Street, N.W. and 9th Street, N.W. and Market Square Park in front of the U.S. Archives Building.  To honor those who serve in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines, the Memorial plaza features granite pavement that replicates the world’s oceans, fountain pools, a statue created by Stanly Bleifield called The Lone Sailor, landscaped seating areas, and monumental lighting.  The Market Square Park included an urban plaza with fountains.

Volkert’s design of the pavements, utilities, drainage, electrical, and lighting for the plazas, sidewalks, fountain and bandstand areas, and underground service rooms was approved by the National Capital Planning Commission.
