US 90, the “Southern Route 66,” is one of the South’s most traveled scenic highways. Hurricane Katrina washed away key portions of the highway from Louisiana to Alabama, including the Biloxi Bay Bridge between Biloxi and Ocean Springs. Volkert helped assess and oversee the removal of the damaged bridge and the reconstruction of the new one for the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
As part of the design-build team contracted to replace the bridge, Volkert provided construction quality control services to ensure that the work conformed to contract documents, including the construction quality control manager, senior and regular inspectors to provide all quality control and testing functions for the project. Volkert supervised and coordinated material testing and certification required by the prime contract as well as field and laboratory testing. Volkert developed a detailed construction quality control plan acceptable to the contractor and owner.
The first two lanes were opened two weeks ahead of schedule for use by the traveling public. The new Biloxi Bay Bridge is an attractive and culturally significant structure, essential to the restored economic vitality of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Scope of Work: Bridge Inspection, Quality Control, Materials Testing and Certification, Surveying, Geotechnical Services, Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI)
