Thompson High School

Volkert was selected as program manager for the newly formed Alabaster City School System. Volkert coordinated the separation from the Shelby County School System and served as facility manager for the schools during the transition period. Our team was responsible for assessing the school facilities, creating a Capital Improvement Plan for the client, and managing multiple renovations in the first year of the new school system, including installing new HVAC controls, re-keying all facilities to a master key system, and renovating the existing football stadium.

Volkert also worked to facilitate the planning, design, bidding, and construction of a new Thompson High School, replacing the existing school. Our team created the preliminary building program for the new HS facility, the master project schedule and budget. The new high school was built on part of a new 305 +/- acre site purchased by Alabaster City Schools. The campus is 165 acres of the new site and includes approximately 360,000 square feet of classroom, cafeteria, auditorium, and gymnasium space as well as new athletic facilities.

The athletic facilities include a new football stadium, indoor practice field, weight room, field house, baseball stadium, softball stadium, track stadium, and tennis courts. Sitework included the harvesting of 165 acres of timber, 2.5 million cubic yards of earthmoving, and road improvements on two county access roads. The project also included new water/wastewater infrastructure construction as well as electrical, gas, and communication utilities being extended to the site. The project was completed in February 2018.
