Volkert has provided services to federal departments and agencies since its inception, when the firm designed waterfront and drydock facilities for the U.S. Navy in New Orleans and Mobile before and during World War II. More recently, Volkert has provided design services to military bases domestically and in Afghanistan. 

In transportation, Volkert has inspected bridges, tunnels, and structures in National Parks and other federally-owned lands for nearly two decades for the Federal Highway Administration, including national landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty. And since the 1950s, Volkert has been a leading provider of transportation services to the department of transportation of the District of Columbia, a federal district, including designs for the Anacostia Freeway and a streetscape for Pennsylvania Avenue
