January 22, 2021

Volkert’s Springfield, Virginia, office provided multi-disciplinary design services for Washington DC’s C Street, NE rehabilitation project, which recently won the Washington DC Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (WDCSITE) Project of the Year Award.

C Street, NE between 14th and 22nd Streets, NE serves as an urban gateway to Washington DC’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. It is also a vital neighborhood street that provides access to homes, local schools, and recreation centers.

Volkert provided multi-disciplinary design services for this multimodal project creating safer accessibility and connectivity for residents and visitors, and an environment that provides a positive experience for the neighborhood’s local users.

Volkert’s design features traffic calming, bike lanes, bulb-outs, raised crosswalks, ADA upgrades, and two High intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) signals.

The design also decreases the overall impervious area and provides opportunities for low-impact development (LID) stormwater management (SWM) facilities throughout the corridor.

The construction phase of the project is expected to begin in early 2021.
